Grant County Fire District 8 Station 81
Rising from the agricultural landscape of Mattawa, Washington, this new fire station gave a rural district more capability for less money, with enough left over to honor those who came before.
Grant County Fire District 8 had been working with a prior design team to balance cost and program for a new station, but the project had stalled. Architects West and Perlman Architects stepped in to help refine the program, reorganize internal response routing for greater efficiency, and deliver the same function and amenities in a smaller, smarter footprint.
The design aesthetic is deliberately reflective of its rural and agricultural context. Inside, the station supports career firefighters with six dorms, a multiple-shift kitchen, training room, and the full operational infrastructure of a modern emergency response facility.
The most rewarding outcome was what the savings made possible. The final bid came in well enough that the District was able to construct a firefighter memorial plaza within the original budget, complete with a display for a historic half-track. It is a meaningful addition that transforms the station from a functional building into a place of community pride and remembrance.
